Dr. Christopher L. Newman is an Associate Professor of Marketing in the School of Business Administration at the University of Mississippi. He holds the P.M.B. Self and William King Self Chair of Free Enterprise and also serves as Director of the Marketing Doctoral Program. Dr. Newman has a B.B.A. in Marketing from the University of Mississippi, a M.S. in Marketing from the University of Alabama, and a Ph.D. in Marketing from the University of Arkansas. He is also founder of One Percent
Marketing Consulting.
Dr. Newman is an expert on marketing and consumer behavior, and has been featured by numerous popular press outlets including Forbes, USA Today, Yahoo, Business Insider, ABC, Reader’s Digest, US News & World Report, CBS, Nasdaq, MSN, Fox Business, and The New York Times, among many others. His research has also been featured in invited presentations to both the Food & Drug Administration and the Federal Trade Commission.
Dr. Newman’s academic research has been cited over 1,300 times to date. For his work, he received the 2021 Responsible Research in Marketing Award from the American Marketing Association (AMA) & EBSCO, as well as the 2018 Emerging Scholar Award from AMA's Marketing & Society Special Interest Group. Before that, he received the 2011 Brenda Derby Memorial Award for his research as a doctoral student. More recently, he was awarded the Thomas Ponzurick Top Paper in Conference Award and Best Paper in Track Award at the 2021 Association of Marketing Theory and Practice Conference. The Ole Miss Business School has twice honored him with the Outstanding Publication of the Year Award (2016, 2014), and twice named him the Outstanding Junior Researcher of the Year (2015, 2014).
Dr. Newman's research has been published in the leading marketing academic journals, including the Journal of Consumer Research, Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, Journal of Retailing, Journal of Public Policy & Marketing, Journal of Business Research, Industrial Marketing Management, and the American Journal of Health Promotion, among others. He currently serves on the Editorial Boards of the International Journal of Advertising, Journal of Public Policy & Marketing, Journal of Service Research, and the Journal of Consumer Affairs.
Dr. Newman has taught courses at both the doctoral and undergraduate level, including Experimental Design & Analysis, Advanced Studies in Consumer Behavior, Data Analysis & Interpretation, Social and Digital Media Metrics, Retail Strategy, Consumer Behavior, and International Marketing.
He is certified in Google Analytics, as well as through Hootsuite's Platform Training and HubSpot Academy's Social Media program.
Before entering academia, Dr. Newman worked for a large beverage distributor in Mobile, Alabama where he managed the sales, pricing, and promotions in over 40 retail accounts.
